My project focuses on restaurant inspection data from the New York City Health Department. I collected restaurant violation records and organized them into six categories. These include pest problems, such as rats and cockroaches, improper food temperature control or sanitization, and other potential food safety hazards. For the visualization, I divided New York City into its five boroughs, such as Brooklyn and Queens. Each borough is represented by a slice of cake. On the surface of each cake slice, I use visual elements inspired by bacteria and mold to represent different types of health violations. Through their shapes, colors, and proportions, I want to show how common each type of violation is in different boroughs. My goal is to turn abstract inspection data into something visually striking, making it easier for people to compare restaurant hygiene conditions across New York City.

Different butterflies are generated by changing five variables: upper-wing shape, lower-wing shape, body shape, antenna shape, and color. The coding system is based on each person’s birthday. Birthday Butterfly Cipher — Rule Set 1. Write the birthday as four digits: MMDD. Example: June 20 → 0620 2. Add 1 to each digit. If the digit is 9, it loops back to 0. 0→1, 1→2, 2→3 … 8→9, 9→0 3. The four new digits control the first four butterfly variables: - 1st digit → Upper-wing shape - 2nd digit → Lower-wing shape - 3rd digit → Body shape - 4th digit → Antenna shape 4. Add these four digits together. 5. Keep only the ones digit of the sum. 6. This number controls the fifth variable → Butterfly color. Example 0620 → add 1 to each digit → 1731 Then: 1 + 7 + 3 + 1 = 12 Keep the ones digit: 2 So the final butterfly code is: 17312 1 = Upper wing 7 = Lower wing 3 = Body 1 = Antenna 2 = Color

This project is a generative visual system developed from last week’s “butterfly cryptography” exercise. By learning loops and custom functions, I expanded the logic of generating a single butterfly into a system that can continuously repeat, grow, and arrange itself. In this system, each butterfly is made up of several variable elements, including the antennae, upper wings, lower wings, and color. I wrote separate functions for these parts and used random values to create different combinations, generating many unique butterfly forms. At the same time, I used nested loops to control how the butterflies are arranged on the canvas: as they move downward, the butterflies become smaller, increase in number, and get closer together, creating a visual rhythm of continuous expansion and multiplication.
